Sudbury Against War and Occupation
We are a group of Sudbury residents that are opposed to war and occupation. The group formed in early 2007 to plan an event for the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq on March 17th. We wanted to create an opportunity for people in Sudbury to voice our ongoing opposition to the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, particularly the involvement of the Canadian military and Canadian corporations. Our opposition includes but is not limited to Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine. Further, we emphasize that Canada exists as an occupation of Indigenous territories. Consequently, we firmly support Indigenous peoples’ struggles for self-determination.
Our Actions so far have included:
•Tabling at Earth Day and the Northern Lights Festival
•Screening films in support of Indigenous struggles – Including: Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, John Graham Defence, Grassy Narrows, Zapatistas, Finding Dawn
•Screening the film 500 Miles to Babylon about life in occupied Iraq, including a Q&A period with the director
•supporting the local War Resisters Support Committee in their work to help U.S. soldiers who seek shelter in Canada
•Cosponsoring speaking events by US-based Indigenous activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
•Supported the Feb. 14th memorial and protest for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
•Support the NYM and other Indigenous groups in their campaigns and issues.
•Organizing rallies and events in opposition to secret trials and security certificates as a domestic consequence of racism and the ‘war on terror’.
What we plan to do next:
•Actively support other organizations and individuals campaigns and events dealing with Indigenous struggles in Canada and around the world
•Continue our public education campaign on Indigenous struggles from the perspective of allies
•Screen films and hold public education events on Indigenous struggles
•Continue to organize and voice opposition to the wars and occupations of Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine.
